Port Macquarie

/pɔt məˈkwɒri/ (say pawt muh'kworee)

noun
a town on the north coast of NSW, at the mouth of the Hastings River; popular tourist and fishing area.
{named by John Oxley after Governor Lachlan Macquarie1}
Port Macquarie lies in territory traditionally inhabited by the Biripi people. Captain James Cook (1770) and Matthew Flinders (1802) sailed along the coast; the Hastings River and the port were explored by John Oxley in 1818. Captain Francis Allman led a party to establish a penal settlement here in 1821. Sugar cane was grown from 1822 and a sugar mill (the first in Australia) established in 1824; the climate was unsuitable, however, and all the district's mills had closed by 1880. St Thomas's Anglican church, designed by Francis Greenway and built in 1824–28, is Australia's third oldest church. Port Macquarie's function as a penal settlement declined from 1830 as free settlers spread along the coast. The lighthouse, built in 1879, is the third oldest in Australia. There has been rapid expansion as a resort and retirement centre since the 1970s.
